During the first quarter of 2007 we will change our standard surface treatment from yellow zinc chromate to the zinc flake coating Delta Protekt®. This new coating is compliant with RoHS and ELV.

The new standard surface treatment for NORD-LOCK steel washers is the zinc flake coating DeltaProtekt®. DeltaProtekt® coated washers are compliant with EU directive 2000/53/EC on end of life vehicles (ELV) and EU directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS). Our previous standard surface treatment yellow chromate contained the detrimental substance hexavalent chromium and is therefore not in accordance with mentioned EU directives.

NORD-LOCK is a proud keeper of an ISO 14001 environmental certificate and is commited to always choose the most environmental friendly of two similar products.

Comparison yellow chromate vs. zinc flake coating

DeltaProtekt® has proven to be the superior treatment when it comes to the characteristics of the washers. Steel washers with zinc flake coating (DeltaProtekt®) are significantly more resistant to corrosion and endure corrosive environments more than four times longer than yellow chromate or passivated washers before showing any tendency of red rust (both types of washers exceed the corrosion resistance requirements for ISO 4520). Zinc flake (DeltaProtekt®) coated washers are also harder, which makes them suitable for a wider range of applications and materials.
